John Hovanesian

JOHN A. HOVANESIAN, M.D., FACS is a specialist in Cornea, Cataract, Refractive, and Laser Surgery. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute.

Dr. Hovanesian is a recognized leader in the research and use of advanced lenses used in cataract surgery as well as the newest advances in pterygium surgery.  He has published two eye surgery textbooks, produced numerous surgical teaching videos, lectured to surgeons throughout the world and written dozens of articles.   He is Editor of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Ophthalmic News and Education Network cataract surgery section and an editor and contributing writer to five other ophthalmology journals.

Dr. John Hovanesian joined Harvard Eye Associates in 1999 after spending two years as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute in a fellowship specializing in laser, cataract, and corneal surgery.  At UCLA he received international acclaim for his research in optimizing the quality of vision after laser surgery.  

Dr. Hovanesian completed his undergraduate education in three years, graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of Michigan’s Honors Chemistry Program, where he was named to the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society in his sophomore year. In medical school, he published research on improving the vision of glaucoma surgery patients at the University of Michigan’s Kellogg Eye Center.  In his ophthalmology residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Michigan, he was elected Resident of the Year and appointed Chief Resident by his faculty.

Today, Dr. Hovanesian is a recognized innovator and teacher of eye surgery. He is the Editor of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s primary source regarding new developments in cataract surgery, the Ophthalmic News and Education network. He is also an editorial board member for Ocular Surgery News, Cataract and Refractive Surgery Today, Advanced Ocular Care, The Premier Surgeon and is one of two ophthalmologists on the editorial board of Primary Care Optometry News.  

He has been invited to lecture on five continents. He has two textbooks in publication:  one on the subject of advanced technology in cataract surgery and one on the treatment of pterygium.   His dozens of surgical technique videos and research articles are widely referenced in other publications and lectures.  He is listed among the world’s top 250 eye surgery innovators by the journal The Premier Surgeon.

An Eagle Scout, Dr. Hovanesian has spent many years as a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America and has been honored on numerous occasions by the Boy Scouts for his volunteer service.  He has also made over a dozen trips overseas to the third world to volunteer his time performing eye surgery.  He spends his weekends teaching Sunday school at his church in Costa Mesa, spending time with his wife and three young children at home in Laguna Beach, and enjoying his hobbies of food, swimming, piano, and performing magic.
